Pumpkin Patch Fun in the Bay Area

Pumpkin Patch Fun in the Bay Area

It’s October & that means all things pumpkin. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes and of course, trips to the pumpkin patch!

We rounded up a list of local pumpkin patches to visit as well as a guide on picking the perfect pumpkin! For those wondering what variety of pumpkin to look for, we have Pumpkin Varieties & their use also listed for you.

Varieties of Pumpkins

  • Sugar – Excellent for baking
  • Jack O’Lantern – most common for carving
  • White Lumina – unusual, medium-sized white pumpkin
  • Mini – Great for decoration
  • Gourds – Many varieties, used for decorations

If you are looking for the perfect pumpkin to decorate (paint or carve), look for:

Look for any pumpkin that is

  • Visually appealing with an even color of deep orange
  • The shape you choose is whatever appeals to you! If it grew on it’s side & has a flat spot, use that flat spot to highlight your decorating design.
  • Free from cuts, bruises & soft spots. The flesh should feel hard and not give easily. Infections can spread quick & cause your pumpkin to rot.
  • Has a stem still attached

Store it carefully, especially if you pick it from the vine yourself. Cure a fresh-picked pumpkin by keeping it in a dry place. Don’t handle or disturb it. Curing toughens the rind, making it less prone to rot. Pumpkins will keep for months in a cool (50 F to 65F dry, low humidity environment; such as a cool, dry basement.

Tip: If you like roasted or baked pumpkin seeds, you can save the seeds from any pumpkin!
